Context, Disclaimers, & Reminders

Skip to the Guide if you know all this cause hi, you’ve been Guide’ing for years

Most of my recommendations aren’t your traditional gift ideas.

I find efficiency, organization, comfort, ease, death preparation, and cleaning sexy; I’d much rather a Container Store gift card than diamonds.

I don’t care about fashion, makeup, skincare, labels, “have to make reservations six months in advance” restaurants, jewelry (my Overstock.com wedding ring cost $19) or many other things seemingly everyone else cares about.

Gifts for others are the best! So are gifts for self! We often neglect self; you’re a better parent, spouse, friend, coworker, sibling, boss+ when you take care of self.

I’m frugal AF but I have fancy taste when it comes to some things, mostly travel related (hotels, first class, airport lounges). My budget often doesn’t allow for fancy so finding budget-friendly ways to indulge is also a love e.g. travel hacking. You can see travel hacks we’ve done—e.g. flying first class to Chicago to Tokyo for $250 each—and how we’ve done them—e.g. credit card recommendations—on the blog; use the “travel” filter.

Gift Someone With the Fanciest Version of What They Already Use — this is a very Life of Yes℠ mentality (I’ve gotten and so appreciated premium versions of music streaming services, Canva, etc.).

Here’s a video of one of the best gifts I’ve ever given (and received!). Loved how many people “stole” the idea.

Links may be referral links. If an Amazon link, as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.

Speaking of Amazon, an encouragement to buy anything you can buy elsewhere elsewhere if it’ll help a small business. Use my links as recommendation/research links and see if your local Mom & Pop has what I recommend. If you do buy on Amazon though, encouragement to go through small business affiliate links so at least you’re kinda shopping small.

Buying someone a service — haircut, manicure, house cleaning — is deliciously win-win-win especially if you know the service provider (my Service Provider Referral List is here); you win, the gift recipient wins, and the service provider wins.

I don’t have Mac & Cheese items on the official list, but obvs, buy my stuff!

You can find previous year gift guides on my blog (filter by “gifts”).

Annual reminder of the best Thanksgiving turkey recipe (time sensitive!).

At any time of year if you’re jonesing for my recommendations, I have a bunch of lists I keep updated in the Mac & Cheese Amazon Store.

Experiences

For any of the experiences below that are in select cities, if piqued but you/your gift-tee lives elsewhere, encouraged to see if a similar goodness exists in the desired area. You can give it a Google or see if I have any listed on the “Getting out there tab” on my Life of Yes℠ Resources table on my Lists page. These are meant to be sources of inspiration as well as actual gifts.

Solo outing! Date outing! Friends outing! Family outing! Work outing! Visitor in town outing! Self outing!

Journee

“Go on an unforgettable surprise trip. Plan none of it. Start with a quick quiz about your travel taste. Get matched with every detail sorted. Find out where you’re going at the airport.”

Pack Up and Go

A Saya Ask: Drop my name if you book?! “When your loved ones sign up for a Pack Up + Go trip, make sure they mention your name when we ask ‘How did you hear about Pack Up + Go?’ We’ll then reach out to you to provide you your points! It’s that simple!”

“Let us plan your getaway. The catch? Your destination is a surprise!”

*Explore Chicago, Susan Brigid

Custom tours also available, as are photos and other gifts. You’ll be in the best of hands with Susan! Fun fact: Susan’s my Life of Yes℠ poster child on my homepage, at the bottom. That’s how Life of Yes’y she is!

“I lead 90-minute art & architecture walking tours in downtown Chicago, which double as cell phone camera workshops, with occasional hikes in regional forest preserves and parks. I offer a selection of self-guided Chicago tours – half-day or full-day that include place descriptions and a Google map.”

Lectures On Tap

For those of y’all who loved our Idea Potluck series or are Pecha Kucha fans, this is for you.

“Lectures on Tap is an event series where professors and experts give thought-provoking lectures inside of bars. 40 minute lectures by professors, experts, and storytellers. NYC • LA • SF • Boston • Chicago.”

REACH Women’s Network

Y’all know how protective I am with my resources and how much I loathe “networking” in the traditional sense. The whole reason I birthed Mac & Cheese twenty-one years ago. I’ve been a guest and member of similar groups in the past, some to great fanfare, some to extreme disappointment.

REACH was the first substantial “getting out there” money I dropped and by my first event as an official member just weeks later, WORTH IT. And when I say “money I dropped,” I actually mean money my husband and mother in law dropped — when they asked me what I wanted for my birthday, I said “A REACH membership.”

I loooooove these type of presents with my whole heart! Something I very much wanted. Something I very much appreciate someone else paying for. Something that every time I use it, I think fondly of the gifters.

“The REACH Women’s Network is a group of working women committed to reaching over, reaching up, reaching out, and reaching back to improve our own lives, the lives of women around us, and the communities in which we live.”

Early Birds Club

“A dance party inspired by the bygone nights spent clubbing with your girlfriends … but now at a much more reasonable hour: 6–10pm. Expect wall-to-wall bangers from the ‘80s, ‘90s, and 2000s—think pop, hip-hop, R&B, new wave, and house. But it’s more than just a dance party. Earlybirds Club is designed as a safe space for women, trans, and non-binary folks (something that’s needed now more than ever), but people of all backgrounds and identities are encouraged to attend all of our events. It’s movement. It’s music. It’s your kind of night out.”

Woof Walks (Winston-Salem) | Doggie Day Out (Chicago)

Best Friend and I donated to the Forsyth Humane Society in exchange for the opportunity to take Limp Biscuit and Kentucky for a walk, along with a few other volunteers. The dogs rotate and the number of them available to walk depend on how many people sign up. You can pay by single walk and they also offer five walk and ten walk passes. I would love the latter as a gift!

Many rescues have Overnight and Field Trip opportunities.

“Stay active, make new friends, and help shelter dogs get the exercise and enrichment they need!”

“CACC’s Doggie Day Out Program (DDO) is designed to give long-term dogs (over 30 days) in our care an opportunity to get out of the shelter environment and spend time out in the world. This Program will help relieve the stress that many dogs feel living in the shelter environment, and it will allow the dogs to be seen / marketed while out on their Doggie Day Out. Doggie Day Out Program Fosters are encouraged to help the dogs in our care experience life outside of the shelter and to promote adoption / rescue of the dog (social media, pictures) in order to help the dog find its forever home! Doggie Day Out Program Fosters may bring the dog to any local, public location which allows dogs or to your private residence. Doggie Day Out Program Fosters are allowed to check a dog out for the day Tuesday through Thursday for up to 4 hours.”

Flywheel

Look for a coworking spot that’s heavy on the community and events. It’s important to me that the space is more than just literal space. I’ve been really impressed with Flywheel’s array of goodness, from their free monthly Community Days open to members and non-members to their more intimate workshops on a range of topics.

Not every coworking spot is created equal. Do that research, ask for recommendations, ask for opinions. I wrote a detailed something-something on my Soho House member experience that others very much appreciated before deciding to jump in the (expensive) waters.

“We actively support the acceleration of your personal and professional success. That makes us more than an office rental or coworking desk.”

Meet IRL

Many singles events are the worst thing ever. These facilitators look like they’ve got it down as far as making dating enjoyable, a tall feat these days (so I hear from single friends).

“Meet IRL was founded after years of hearing our friends despair about their experiences of modern dating. We believe that dating should be an enjoyable experience – not one that leaves us feeling despondent or exhausted.”

Dabble Art Bar

Best Friend and I went for a date night and had the best time. I collaged and he carved a stamp (a Thank You card for my business; how sweet!). I love a place where the menu isn’t food or drink but crafts. And the esthetics—if you’re into Instagram-worthy design, you’ll love it here.

“Everyday is like a house party for us. We’re passionate about creating an immersive, vibey, welcoming, inspiring, safe space for all people! As socially awkward, life-long creative “dabblers”, we’ve found that casual art activities are a fabulous way to release the stress of the day, recharge, and meet new friends!”

Muddy Creek Listening Room

What an intimate way to enjoy music! The best part? Start time of 2pm and seats for everyone. Yes I am in my middle-aged era.

“Muddy Creek Café & Music Hall at Old Salem is a family friendly, rustic cafe known for hosting incredible folk and traditional musicians.”

Hot Mess Express

I’ve done two missions thus far (pics are the before and afters), donating about five weekend hours with a group of other volunteers, cleaning a home.

“Hot Mess Express Rescue is a women led nonprofit with chapters across the United States. We serve the women in our community with no judgement through cleaning, organizing, and offering a fresh start.”

Fortune Feimster | Tig Notaro | Mae Martin

I’ve been cackling listening to the Handsome Pod the past few months, which features comics Fortune, Tig, and Mae. “Friends” are often celebrities, e.g. Jennifer Aniston, Alanis Morrissette, and Seth Meyers. I enjoy that the friends aren’t actually on the show; the questions are pre-recorded. I don’t need to hear another interview of or with ______. They usually riff on every day life stuff for the first bit of the podcast and then use the question as a springboard to other random goodness.

I woke Best Friend up the other night, shaking with silent laughter as I listened in bed with my air buds in.

Tickets to see them live, as a trio or as individual acts, would be the most fun.

“The Handsome Pod is a podcast hosted by comedians Tig Notaro, Fortune Feimster, and Mae Martin. In each episode, they answer a question from a friend, sharing stories and having a humorous discussion that can often go off-topic.”

Winston Girls Club

Wonderful array of events, from price to age, activity to location. The founder, Galina, and I met at Flywheel and when she repeated back to me what I’ve been saying since starting Mac & Cheese—”Making friends as an adult is hard”—and with the same desire for continued goodness after an event is over, I knew I’d found an un-networking group I wanted to be a part of and wanted to share with others.

“Making lasting friendships in #winstonsalemnc + surrounding cities. Local events for women 18+.”

Items

Fan

We used these in the bedroom and offices. Sooooo quiet yet powerful. I’ve seen them at Costco too.

“Experience powerful air circulation with this versatile WOOZOO remote-controlled fan. Emitting only 30 dB of noise, this air circulator is perfect for when you need a breeze while trying to sleep or study, or just want to be cool and relax without any loud noises or distractions. With five speed settings and coverage up to 353 ft², this compact fan delivers customizable comfort for any room.”

Cable management box

Cord ugliness is one of my biggest pet peeves. We have more of these than I can count, including the one above on my desk. Besides our offices, we also have them in the bedroom and living room. Y’all know I love a hidden mess; perfect solution!

“Large cable organizer box for power strips, adapters, chargers. Out of sight, out of mind – hides and organize all your cables, adapters, wires, charger, power strips, cords in this cord hider box.”

Antimicrobial body exfoliator

Upon research into loofahs, poofs, and washcloths, I was horrified at how bacteria infested they all were. I too fell for the African Bath Sponge craze but sadly, those too are prone to more ick than I’d like on a body cleansing tool. These silicone body scrubbers seem the best alternative.

“Ditch traditional loofahs and washcloths! Our exfoliating body scrubber is hypoallergenic, long-lasting, and easy to clean for superior hygiene.”

Subscription bouquet delivery

This is one of those “If I was rich…” or “I’d never buy for myself but would looooove as a gift” purchases. And if the profits help those in need? Love love love.

“Southside Blooms is a social enterprise dedicated to transforming vacant lots into productive, sustainable flower farms. As part of the broader Chicago Eco House initiative, we empower at-risk youth through jobs in sustainability, urban farming, and floriculture. Every bouquet we sell creates jobs, converts blight into beauty, and helps create a greener, more equitable Chicago.”

Here’s a San Francisco option

Virtual private network

Have used Private Internet Access for years and love it for when I’m laptopping in an airport, coffeehouse, or hotel, and for when traveling when I want to watch a show that’s not available in whatever country I’m in. Your VPN tells your computer you’re in Chicago even if you’re in Italy.

“A VPN, or virtual private network, is an app that can greatly increase your online security, privacy, and freedom. When you use a VPN, you can secure your traffic with best-in-class encryption, bypass network blocks and access sites securely, and stay connected to e-services when you travel abroad.”

Tracker devices

We use these in our car and luggage. We also used them when we moved Chicago to Winston-Salem; it was cool to be able to see where our stuff was in a scenario that’s often fraught with the unknown and oopsies.

  • “OUR THINNEST TRACKER: Protect lost or stolen stuff and make family life easier. Slide into wallets, passports, luggage, and more
  • STAY SAFE WITH SOS: Discreetly trigger an SOS alert to your loved ones in unsafe situations
  • FIND YOUR THINGS: Ring your misplaced Tile, or track it down in the free app
  • FIND YOUR PHONE: Phone hiding under a cushion? Use your Tile to make it ring — even when silenced
  • USE WITH LIFE360: Add your Tiles to Life360 — a top family connection and safety app – to see everything and everyone on the same map”

Make water more appealing

I’m the worst at drinking water. Adding a bit of flavor goes a long way in enticing me. I wanted to limit the amount of artificialness used as I try to really increase my water consumption so in an attempt to stay away from Crystal Light and the like, found True Lime. It’s tart so I’ll often mix in another sweeter flavor (they have a bevy of options). It’s working!

“True Lime was created based on the foundational principle that tasting is believing. Say goodbye to bad limes, not having a lime when you want it, or throwing away a lime because you didn’t use it in time. True Lime comes in individual packets, so you can always have the taste of real lime at your fingertips. Made from real limes, True Lime utilizes a patented powdered lime recipe that crystalizes all of the natural flavors of limes without adding any artificial sweeteners, colors, flavors or preservatives. Our crystalized lime packets are also a 0 calorie water flavoring and has 0 grams of sugar as well as being Non-GMO, gluten-free, and sodium-free. True Lime tastes just like a fresh-squeezed lime, and with a two year shelf life, you’ll never be without the taste of lime again.”

Laundry fabric softener pods

Speaking of trying to stay away from chemical-ick, this is another alternative I’ve been digging. While using no fabric softener is best, I can’t help it; I love a laundry scent and fluffiness. These are my compromise.

“Dropps Fabric Softener Pods are the first of its kind and add a boost of softness with mineral-based ingredients that maintain, protect, and preserve clothing while delivering a crisp scent with a hint of citrus and a touch of pine. With Dropps, you can say goodbye to rough, scratchy clothes and hello to a wardrobe that feels luxurious and smells delightful without any added effort. Unlike conventional liquid softeners that coat fabrics with residue, our mineral-powered formula softens and freshens without the use of quats (aka quaternary ammonium compounds) or other harsh chemicals. Made without phthalates, phosphates, dyes, chlorine, parabens and sulfates. Cruelty free and vegan.”

Hanging toiletry bag

I use this both for travel and for the gym. It makes both soooo much easier. Keep it stocked and ready to go so you never arrive somewhere and have the horrible “Oh crap, I forgot ______” sinking sensation. The hook was really important to me, to use in the shower at the gym and to not have to put it on potentially icky hotel surfaces.

  • “HANGS FOR EASY ACCESS: Built-in hook lets you hang the bag anywhere, perfect for hotel bathrooms or cruise cabins. Unzips to reveal 4 spacious compartments and a front zipper pocket, keeping toiletries, skincare, and makeup organized and within reach.
  • PROTECTIVE & TSA-FRIENDLY: Foam padding shields your bottles and containers. Elastic bands hold brushes and razors in place. Waterproof and clear pockets for wet items and TSA checks.
  • PERFECT TRAVEL GIFT: Ideal for frequent travelers, flight attendants, business professionals, and vacation lovers. Lightweight and compact to fit any suitcase, making a thoughtful gift for moms, dads, wives, husbands, and friends on holidays, birthdays, or special occasions.
  • WATER-RESISTANT & EASY TO CLEAN: Durable polyester with waterproof sections, just wipe clean. Perfect for storing travel-size shampoo, conditioner, face wash, toothbrushes, and even a full-size hairbrush. Keeps everything dry, tidy, and ready for any trip”

Electric mower

Was not on my bingo card! But after we moved to our first single family home, I realized it was much needed. I saw a neighbor using this one and commented to him on how quiet it was. Next day, went out and bought one myself. It’s been a delight to use. And I’ll admit, I was a wee scared. I had never mowed before. Easy peasey! I love that you can use the battery with other Kobalt items. Very handy if I decide to get that weed whacker I’ve been eyeing.

“The Kobalt 40-Volt Max Brushless Motor Lawn Mower provides superior performance without the noise, mess, and fumes of gas. The 40V mower offers versatility with 3-1 cutting modes along convenient push button start. Offering up to 60-minutes of cut time, the 40V mower has you covered. The included 6.0Ah battery and charger are compatible with all Kobalt 40-volt max tools and are backed by a 5-year limited warranty on the tool and a 3-year limited warranty on the battery and charger.”

Dishwasher

This is the model I chose after tons of research when we reno’ed our kitchen (last two pics above), the Bosch 800. I only had six months with her before we sold our place but what a glorious six months they were. I thought she was broken every time I used her because she made no noise. I enjoyed being able to control her via a phone app and getting a ping that she was done.

I love our new life and don’t miss many things about our old life. This is one I do miss. Our current dishwasher blows chunks. This gal — you need her.

“Transforms moisture into heat up to 176°F to give dishes, even plastics, the ultimate dry. The deepest clean. So quiet, you can’t always tell it is running — this is what makes Bosch the quietest dishwasher brand in the U.S. A flexible top rack for your utensils with expandable wings and adjustable tines to accommodate bulky and tall items. Adjust the upper rack to 9 different positions, allowing for taller items like stemware or leaving room for pots and pans below.”

Digital picture frame

I was skeptical when these first came out and were all the rage. Pricey… Analog is better… Eh…

But, we bought one for Best Friend’s parents and kinda wish we had bought it for ourselves! They love it. As someone who no longer wants stuff, I’m a fan of not having to print photos nor buy frames. You can share the frame with anyone and they can upload photos as they wish. Kinda fun to randomly add photos without giving a heads up to whomever’s frame it is!

  • “TOP-RATED WIFI DIGITAL FRAME: Millions of customers are delighted by Aura as the easiest way to share and display photos with loved ones. Recommended by The New York Times/Wirecutter, Wired, and Oprah’s Favorite Things.
  • FROM YOUR PHONE TO THEIR FRAME: Send photos and videos directly from your phone to an Aura digital picture frame. Invite family and friends to add photos too from anywhere in the world. Free, unlimited storage. No fees.
  • QUICK & EASY SETUP: Set up in minutes on WiFi and instantly add photos and videos from your phone using the free Aura app. Works with Apple and Android devices.
  • SMART FEATURES: Designed with high-quality materials and a color-calibrated HD display, the Aura Carver landscape frame automatically adjusts screen brightness, manages photo cropping, turns off automatically at night, and more. Includes built-in speaker for video playback.”

Password manager+

It boggles my mind that so many people bemoan having to create and remember yet another username and/or password. Are y’all seriously memorizing these?! Using precious brain power and space to generate and store such dumb info?

My password manager Bitwarden is one of my “would die without” tools that I use a bazillion times a day, on my computer and on my phone.

It’s open source (which in general can mean better security and specifically here, it has a better security track record than the other password managers). It’s free. We have the paid version ($10) because we want to be able to attach files and to have the Emergency Access feature. “Emergency access allows users to designate and manage trusted emergency contacts, who can request access to their vault in cases of emergency.” We gave our alternate power of attorneys access, in case both of us are in an accident or the like.

And it’s not just for usernames and passwords. Credit cards; medical, financial, & travel details… It’s the most adulty trait to need your spouse’s credit card or frequent flier number and be able to bypass asking them and get the info yourself in seconds.

We used to be Lastpass fans and know many of you are. Finger wag. They’ve had tons of security breaches and issues over the years. Recommend not using them.

“The most trusted password manager. Defend against hackers and data breaches with Bitwarden, the best password manager for securely managing and sharing sensitive information.”

Phone case

I love the cuteness + functionality. It’s been tested a few times — aka dropped — and protected the phone like a boss. No cracks, scratches, or other oopise evidence. I wanted to place to keep cards when I go out without my wallet.

Make sure you get one that fits your phone; there are oodles of different sizes.

  • “FASHIONABLE FLORAL DESIGN: Elevate your style with the trendy floral pattern that adds a touch of ELEGANCE and PERSONALITY
  • CONVENIENT 3 CARD HOLDERS: Keep your essential cards and ID handy with the BUILT-IN SLOTS, combining FUNCTIONALITY and FASHION in one sleek design.
  • VERSATILE KICKSTAND FUNCTION: Enjoy HANDS-FREE viewing and video calls with the integrated INTEGRATED KICKSTAND feature, perfect for on-the-go convenience.
  • RELIABLE DROP PROTECTION: Safeguard your phone from accidental drops and impacts with the DURABLE LEATHER CONSTRUCTION and SHOCK-ABSORBING design.”

Double eyeglasses case

I don’t like having two separate cases when I travel but felt I had to with my glasses-glasses and my sunglasses. Enter this adorable solution! Lightweight, waterproof, and offers good breakage and scratch protection.

Curved monitor

My desk.

I can’t believe I used a regular sized monitor for as long as I did. I’ve had this for a few years and it’s been worth every penny. I usually keep my laptop closed and just use this monitor but on occasion, I’ll use both screens. I’m more productive and focused. Computer’ness is easier. We both have one and are both in deep adoration.

Towel warmer

One of the most popular gifts this season. Definitely falls in the “I’d have trouble buying for myself but would love” category. Anything that makes you feel like royalty on the regular, especially when doing a mundane task like showering and bathing, I’m all for.

Glass desktop whiteboard

I’ve shared this before. Some times I think the best gifts are those that lack sex appeal but that you use repeatedly, for a long time, and the gratefulness still exists at the same level it did on Day One. This is one of those.

Instead of using post-its, scratch paper, or notebooks, I prefer to use my wee whiteboard for temporary thoughts that I’ll usually erase in a few days.

The efficiency fan in me loves the storage. 2 in 1!

Portable plug-in travel night light

Hotel bathrooms are often windowless and a chasm of darkness at night. But flicking on the large overhead light hurt my soul and so I’d bathroom in complete dark. After stumbling around blindly one too many times, we finally decided to get a few travel night lights. Life savers! Just remember to take them when you leave, it’s easy to forget they’re plugged in.

We also like this one, from Casper, the sleep people.

Natural travel stain remover

We use this in regular size in our regular life. It was a no brainer when we saw they make travel-sized too. While many natural cleaning products get a bad (understandable) rap cause they don’t work, Puracy is a winner!

“Our stain remover ensures a pristine clean without the compromise. Formulated without sulfates, parabens, bleaches, or petrochemicals, it’s a worry-free choice for every household, safeguarding both your loved ones and the environment.”

Vacuum stand holder for Dyson V15 V11 V10 V8 V7 V6

I got this as a gift from Mother in Law and it’s everything I wanted and more. Storage of my vacuum and all its parts is easier and looks better. Bonus gift: upon return home from Christmas in Louisiana, Best Friend put it together for me.

The woman who bought our Chicago home commented on it in her walk-through, very impressed. I don’t want to claim my Dyson stand is what netted us six offers in a week, most over list price, but… it does scream “If you have this, pretty likely you’re a responsible, has it together adult who takes care of their things.”

Tellicherry peppercorns

“Our signature product. The one that launched our company. We sell these peppercorns to some of the top restaurants in the country.”

Puzzles

“Modern puzzles. Incredible artists. Original, accessible art. Curated puzzles by contemporary artists of color.”

Butter necklace

Daily ceramics

“Helen Levi Ceramics began as a one-woman production line in 2013 in Brooklyn. The studio now resides in Ridgewood, Queens, and focuses on small batch dinnerware & functional pottery.”

Fictional hotel notepads

“These small, functional notepads are just the sort of thing you find by the telephone in most lodgings. The difference is that these are places you can never go.”

Party of One travel guide

“You need never be lonely in Manhattan. At any time of day or night there are diversions and distractions. Alone one can move at any pace – race through a gallery, read a novel in the park, make friends at a lunch counter, spend an afternoon at the cinema, or an entire day bargain shopping. This guide includes 30 entries divided into sections to help find the experience you want: to blend into a crowd, chat with strangers, spoil yourself, or just enjoy your own company. It’s New York after all: anything goes.”

The hotel stationary and the travel guide are via Herb Lester —

“Fiction, reality and the otherworldly co-exist in Herb Lester’s universe. Since 2010, our illustrated maps have documented the distinctive in the world’s great cities, as well as charting locations associated with literature, rock’n’roll, the occult and wider pop culture. Increasingly untethered to the real world, our range of notepads from fictional hotels make ideal souvenirs from places no one can visit. Our products are litho-printed in England on sustainably sourced paper. This is a slower and more costly process than digital printing, but we feel the difference in quality makes it worthwhile.”

Wrapping paper

“BLK MKT Vintage is a Brooklyn, NY-based antique/vintage concept shop, specializing in collectibles, cast-off’s and curiosities, which represent the richness of Black history and lived experience. Curated by founders Jannah and Kiyanna Handy, the collection includes found items like vintage literature, vinyl records, clothing, art, housewares/decor, furniture and other goods. Jannah and Kiyanna are also the authors of “BLK MKT Vintage: Reclaiming Objects and Curiosities That Tell Black Stories”, published in October 2024 by Hachette Book Group. They founded BLK MKT Vintage in November 2014. With over twenty years of collecting and picking experience combined, they both have an affinity for vintage wares and the narratives inherent in black folks’ cultural production throughout history.”

Vintage menu art

“We rescue vintage menus and turn them into fine art prints. We seek out menus from restaurants, bars and saloons, cafes, diners, drive-ins, nightclubs and hotels that are on the brink of being thrown away. Some are damaged, so we both physically and digitally repair the wear and tear of time. We get rid of coffee and gravy stains, erase creases and repair paper tears. Some menus are repaired by professional art restorers and others are cleaned up by talented digital artists. Not too much. We want them to show their age – it is part of their charm.”

Dash cam

After our car got hit when we weren’t there and hearing about the rise of insurance scams where people stop suddenly in front of you to make you hit them (search TikTok for them!), we decided to buy a dash cam once a good one went on sale. This one is the most recommended one by Wirecutter.

It can be a great companion to your car’s EDR if you’re ever in an accident — “an electronic data recorder is a device in a vehicle that records technical data about what happened in the moments before, during, and after a crash. It captures information like vehicle speed, brake status, and seatbelt use to provide an objective account of the crash, but it does not record audio or video.”

Large mailbag tote

The price is a bit much but it’s made from nylon mailbags and shipping straps retired from the USPS, which is cool. And supporting the post office is good, right?

High pressure 8-mode handheld shower head with built-in power wash

We had this installed in our Chicago home right before we moved (dang, our buyer is lucky) and it was fabulous. Y’all know how much of a fan I am of power washing everything you can in the shower. So much faster and easier! Trash cans, outdoor furniture, laundry baskets, luggage…

It’s also much easier to clean a shower with a tool like this. If your shower-heads aren’t removable, move. Or at least install ones that are.

Multi-purpose cleaner

The first time I used this scent was when we were selling our home and had a week of showings. Thus, whenever I smell Daisy, I smell “Phew! Thank god that’s over! What a rollercoaster that ended with such a high! Six offers in a mere few days! Done and done! Next chapter loading!” I can’t prove we had such homeowner success because of this cleaner but…

This and the pine scent are my favorites.

Tangent—

One of my favorite gifts to give as a housewarming gift is a care package of my favorite cleaning items and favorite Trader Joe’s snacks, in a cute tote.

Slippers

I bought a pair in Germany when I stumbled upon them in Muji, one of my favorite stores on earth. The Japanese know how to speak to my heart—office supplies, containers, and comfy clothes. You probably wanna poke around the site and explore more than the slippers. They’re out of stock on the Muji site, hence the Ebay link.

We’re a no shoes household. If you’re not, please consider! As someone who has tons of data on the cleanliness of homes, believe you me; your home may look clean but It. Is. Not. As evidenced by our feet/sock tests — how dirty are our feet/socks if we walk around your home without shoes (which we usually do even if you don’t ask us to)? Usually, very. Best Friend even noticed once after visiting someone’s home. For him to notice and comment… it’s gotta be bad. Our no shoes’ness is a primary reason I bought and wear these slippers.

“Protect your feet at home with our Open Toe Room Sandals. Woven from sturdy and flexible cotton braided cords with a smooth surface so it feels like walking on carpet. The open toe (slide) style allows for easy wear and open breathability, perfect for the warm spring & summer season. These slippers do not include an anti-slip outsole, resulting in a natural barefoot experience during wear.”

*Jewelry

Meredith is a childhood friend of mine. What an absolute joy to see friends blossom and gift us with their gifts.

“Our jewelry is designed for a woman who has a creative leaning, who looks to the timeless rather than the fashion of the moment. One who sees her jewelry as wearable art which makes a statement without overpowering her own presence. Together the two elements: the jewelry and the woman, complement and accentuate the aesthetic of the other. We strive to create pieces that reflect the individual who is unique, elegant and evocative. Each piece is limited edition and is created in Brooklyn, New York by the artist, Meredith Duers.”

Shout out Evanston and our parents for choosing such a wonderful city and neighborhood. Shout out Meredith who shared with me this photo and the companion photo I love so dearly that it may be my author photo on my book.

Gift card to a business near where someone lives

A woman buying her “just divorced, needs to rediscover herself and her confidence” friend my “design your best life” course.

An expectant mom buying herself my cleaning services when she went into the hospital to deliver so she’d have a gorgeous home upon return with new baby was top level gift giving. She even “reserved” us months in advance for a specific time frame, unsure of exact dates. Cause ya know, giving birth.

I didn’t think those could be matched. Checkmate.

Upon learning our plans to leave Chicago, a friend asked for our new address. I thought they wanted to add us to their holiday card list. Or maybeeeee send a housewarming note.

This landed in my inbox a few weeks before we moved — a gift card. TO A COFFEEHOUSE IN OUR NEW NEIGHBORHOOD.

Top level gift giving and thoughtfulness.

Did I take a “walk” via street view from new home to coffeehouse? Obvs.

File this away under GIFTS THAT WILL SQUEEZE SOMEONE’S HEART. Bonus: a black-owned small business.

Shout out to Carol & Brad! Thank youuuuuuuuu!

Crossbody bag

I travel a lot and have fallen in love with my Cotopaxi Crossbody for all things adventure. I love the small yet versatile size, where I can fit a water bottle, phone, toiletries, sunglasses, sweat rag, snacks, raincoat, umbrella if wanted, but that it’s not TOO big.

As a sweater, I didn’t want something on my back, high up or on my waist, so I wear it rested on my boobs, which makes access uber easy. Especially great for phone access — camera, maps, etc. Bonus: best place for security reasons.

Note: if you get the Surprise Pack/One of a Kind, it’s a bit cheaper (where you don’t know the color(s)).

The only caution I’d give is I don’t think it’s a good option if you’re a Fancy Person, if you go to places where you need to dress up. I’m a birkenstocks, elastic waist pants, and food cart type of person so it fits my aura. It’s uber casual and uber noticeable (bright colors!).

“A do-it-all sling bag made from recycled materials. Travel, trail, shopping, everyday—the Todo Sling Bag is here for it all. With a padded strap, it’s a comfy carry, too. The zippered front pocket, daisy chain loops for clipping on extra gear, and L-shaped main compartment—complete with a padded tablet/phone sleeve—make it a utilitarian wonder.”

Carry-on luggage

I didn’t realize how non-joyful my last roller was until I got this. OMG. Sooooo much easier to maneuver. Not to mention cute, light, durable, and holds a lot yet still fits carry-on requirements. Cause if there’s one thing I’m not doing in life, it’s checking a bag. I used to be a backpack girlie, guffawing at folks climbing stairs and navigating sidewalk bumps with rollers but back pain, back sweat, cleaning ease, and just generally not wanting to be attached to luggage at all times made me switch. Zero regrets. Well, one — why didn’t I switch sooner?! I also love that I can use the roller to carry other things, like a coat or another bag. Related: see next item.

This is another item I got as a gift and think fondly of the gifter every time I use it. I love luggage as a gift. When I graduated college, my family bought me my first luggage set, helping me with the preparation of moving to Kingston, Jamaica for a year to teach English at a high school (LOL on life’s twists and turns and that chapter never being written. Stay tuned for that actual chapter in my book…). Regardless of where I ended up with said luggage (Wrigleyville), it was an oh so useful present.

Disclaimer: check sizes for the Carry On and the Bigger Carry On; the latter is too big on many international flights. It’s enticing cause you’re like oooooo, bigger! And still check-able! But then you read the fine print.

“Meet our award-winning Classic suitcases—designed by travelers, for travelers. The Carry-On is our smallest suitcase, sized to fit in all overhead bins and perfect for any quick trip. It features a lightweight, durable hard shell that’s been rigorously tested and a signature interior compression system that helps you pack, organize and protect more. Details like an easy-grip top handle, additional underside grab handle, and smooth-gliding wheels make it easier than ever to maneuver and lift your suitcase. Better travel starts here.”

Carry-on bag companion

I had been on the hunt for a tote that’d supplement my carry-on. Small enough that it could be my “personal item” but big enough to carry all the things (laptop, tech bag, toiletries, Kindle, jacket, snacks, etc.). I wanted cute, lots of pockets including one for a water bottle, and most importantly, one that’d slip over my carry-on and stay securely as I traipse the world. Success on all fronts! Crossed off New Zealand and states 45-50 with it! And I’ll admit—though I don’t usually care about brands, the fact that it’s a North Face spoke to my college-student / early twenties “cool kids” heart.

“The versatile Base Camp Voyager Tote uses highly durable, fully recycled fabrics. With multiple storage compartments including a 16” laptop sleeve, removable shoulder strap and a luggage pass-through, this bag is an ideal all-purpose choice.”

Pill case

Another edition to the “I’m middle-aged” club. Pills for everything! I had just bought a new box when I discovered these so I don’t have one myself but they’re on my list for if and when. Pricey but reviews say worth it. Bonus: they’re FSA reimburseable. Bonus Bonus: a very Life of Yes℠ name. You might recognize it if you’ve heard my keynote or taken my course.

“100% metal pill cases. A cut above the rest. Ikigai Cases are minimalist pill cases featuring geometric shapes and clean cut lines. As one publication put it ‘they look like they belong inside an art gallery.'”

Car seat cover towel

Love this idea for post-gym and post-hike! The idea of our sweaty bodies on our car upholstery gives me hives.

They also have seat-belt covers I’m eyeing.

Vintage collegiate wear

Designs are so good Best Friend has oodles of shirts from schools he didn’t attend, just ones he thinks are “cute.”

Stickers

I don’t know why stickers fall into my “Love! but have a hang-up purchasing for self” category.

With what’s going on in the world, every bit of resistance I can put out into the universe, yes ma’am.

“Our contour-cut stickers are printed on premium vinyl and durable enough for either indoor or outdoor use with an average lifespan of 3-5 years in all weather. Founded in Los Angeles, California, Boredwalk is an artist owned small business. We create comedy content and a fun and diverse selection of gifts and apparel for men, women, non-binary folks, and kids. We support social justice organizations that reflect our values — over the years our small business has donated thousands of dollars to organizations such as ACLU, She Should Run, Planned Parenthood, 314 Action and City of Promise.”

Claw-foot tub shower curtain

Not a claw-foot tub fan, mostly for it’s annoying to shower in them reasons. One of the issues is having to keep the shower curtain inside the tub making it so it feels claustrophobic and so the curtain touches you whenever you move. While ideally I’d completely do away the tub, in our situation of renting, that’s not an option, so had to find another solution. I had never seen the wrap-around magnets on the bottom.

Bath accessories

In my claw-foot tub research, this brand was recommended. They’ve got a variety of interesting bath accoutrements.

“Our mission to create sustainable, thoughtful, functional things for your home and life is stronger than ever. We’ll be launching some new products soon that we hope will be a forehead-slapping, “how did we get by without this?” type of thing. All but one of our products are packaged in 100% compostable packaging (next on the list). Everything from our clear bags to our stickers and mailers are able to go back into the ground.”

Guest bed that’s comfy and doesn’t take up tons of space

We wanted a bed in one of our offices, for guests, that we didn’t want to take up tons of space because it’d rarely be used and that we wanted to be really comfortable. We’re at the age of deeply caring about sleep quality, for selves and others. Enter this perfect solution!

My loves —

  • Drawers for storage
  • When put away, it’s the size of a full bed; when out, it’s a king! Magic.
  • Ease of pulling in and out
  • Hubs and I are not small people (both 6′, both 200+ pounds) and it feels sturdy when we’re both on it
  • Comfort*

*Important note that we tested the IKEA mattresses and thought them too thin, so we got these mattresses instead. Two 8 inch twins.

Can’t comment on ease of assembly as we sprung for someone to assemble it for us via IKEA to keep our marriage in tact. Some money is WORTH IT.

The bed passed the Guest Test with two adults agreeing with us that it was comfy.

Lotto or scratch off tickets

My most favorite item to get in the “Love! but feel guilty buying for self” category are lotto and scratch off tickets. Even if I don’t win. Which I never do. (There’d be signs if I did…)

It’s the OMG potential and the fun of playing that does it for me.

“Healthy” candy that tastes good

Well maybe not healthy but healthier. One of my doctors said Unreal is a good way to have a sweet treat with less of a negative impact than your normal sweet treats. Bonus: vegan.

Variety of types, including knockoff M&Ms, Snickers, and Mounds Bars. Love me a variety pack!

I’ve seen the pb cups and coconut varieties at Costco.
